ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS - BOOK APPOINTMENTS

Key Differences Between a Same-day Appointment and Walk-in Appointment

There’s nothing quite like waking up to a sore throat that won’t let you swallow or a sudden fever just before heading out to work. In moments like these, your first thought is likely: “Can I see a doctor today?” That is when two terms come up: same-day appointments and walk-in visits. They sound similar but work very differently in reality. As a patient, you should be aware of the differences to make the best call for yourself. This will ensure that you quickly get the medical attention you need.

What Is a Same-Day Appointment?

In simple terms, a same-day appointment means you call the clinic to schedule a visit for that same day. It is mostly based on the urgency of your symptoms. While this type of appointment is not booked weeks in advance, you still reserve a time slot. Do not worry if you are not aware of how to prepare for a same-day appointment. It is just like any doctor visit, where you will be asked a few questions about the symptoms and your medical history. There is a wide range of conditions treated with same-day appointments:

Same-day appointments work best when you call early. Our medical team listens to your symptoms and uses medical triage to decide how urgent your case is. This ensures that someone with chest tightness doesn’t wait behind someone with a paper cut.

What is a Walk-in Doctor Appointment?

A walk-in appointment means you arrive at the clinic without calling ahead or booking online. So, whenever you feel sick, you can simply show up, check in at the front desk, and wait for the next available provider. While this is also a convenient option, you must keep in mind that there is a waiting time. On regular days, it should not be longer than 30 minutes. However, this can be much longer during busy days or flu season. Also, the waiting time can be extended if an emergency patient arrives who needs immediate attention.

Most walk-in clinics do not guarantee you will be seen by a specific provider. So, they are not ideal for follow-ups when patients are dealing with ongoing conditions like diabetes or depression. With that being said, you must keep in mind they are perfect for various reasons, like:

But when it comes to continuity or chronic care, like adjusting the Psychiatry care plan or tracking a child’s recurring allergies, a walk-in appointment probably is not your best option.

Key Differences Between a Same-day Appointment and Walk-in Appointment

Though both are designed for faster care, a same-day appointment and walk-in appointment work differently. You must understand the key differences between them to make the right call.

What About Insurance and Cost?

At Renew Health Center, our pricing is transparent for both same-day appointment and walk-in appointment. In most cases, insurance covers both types of visits in the same way.  However, be aware of the following:

  • Walk-in clinics outside your primary care network may charge more.
  • If you are on a care plan or managed Medicare, you usually have a designated provider or care team responsible for coordinating and tracking all your medical care.

If you still have any confusion regarding the pricing or insurance, our front desk team can help you understand your options. You can be unique at any time.

How to Decide Between a Same-day Appointment and Walk-in Appointment?

If you want to see your regular provider, go with a same-day appointment. However, you can book a same-day appointment if you just need immediate medical attention as well. Since it gives you a scheduled time, there is usually less waiting time. Also, there is a chance that your provider already knows your medical history.

But if it is something urgent but not life-threatening, a walk-in might be just fine. As long as you are okay waiting a bit and seeing whichever provider is available, it is a convenient option when you cannot delay medical attention.
